Application Notes

DT-1 Infrared Detector / Timer

Basic Information

1. ESD (Electro Static Discharge) This is what occurs when you walk across a carpet and touch a piece of metal and get a shock. Before touching the DT-1 circuit board You should touch something that is grounded to discharge static electricity you may be storing. This is important to do with any bare electronic circuit boards you handle.

2. The DT-1 circuit boards can be installed at any trackside location with the sensors facing the track. In addition, the circuit board should be mounted on top of some type of shim so the sensors are above the track level in order to keep the infrared from reflecting off the track.  You can use velcro, double back tape.
Caution: do not lay the board down on any metallic surfaces or permanent damage will result.

3. Camouflage: When installation is complete, you can camouflage the DT-1 circuit board with bushes, etc.

4. Use indoors: These units are not designed for out door use.

5. Specifications: Power requirements. 9 to 18 volts DC or 4 to 18 volts AC. Current Drain is approx. 60ma max.

Basic Connecting Configurations

DT-1 by the track

The picture below shows the DT-1 circuit board mounted on a platform raised above track level. Wires can be run in any way that is convenient for your layout. When the installation is completed, you can camouflage the circuit board with bushes, trees or whatever else you choose.

Sound Module Activation when the train passes

Below is shown the basic connections for activating a sound module. As there are 2 sets of relay contacts, you can also activate crossbucks, a gate, or any other event with the other set of contacts.

LED Activation

You can light up a LED at any location you want to indicate where the train is.

Activate Grade Crossing

Below is shown the basic connections for activating a grade crossing crossbucks. As there are 2 sets of relay contacts, You can also activate a grade crossing bell, such as the ITTC HQ300, with the other set of contacts or any other event.

For a simple grade crossing you can use 1 DT-1 right at the grade crossing. If you want more prototypical grade crossing, you can put a DT-1 on each side of the track some distance from the actual crossing. This will be more accurate as the sensor will be activated by trains travelling in either direction before they reach the crossing. You would then arrange the wires from the first DT-1 to the second DT-1 in parallel.

Auto Reversing the easy way

When the train comes to the DT-1 it will be sensed and energize the relay, reversing the power to the track, sending the train in the opposite direction. It will continue to run in the opposite direction for the period of time set on the timer adjust. When it times out, the relay will de-energize and the power to the track will reverse, sending the train back to the DT-1.
